Curriculum

Look Both Ways' curriculum is designed to facilitate discussion with your group. The questions presented are key points to aid you in initiating thought processes among your youth. As we all know, to stand up and “lecture” is boring for everyone-including you!

Your curriculum set includes an outline along with 3 CDs:

  •  Level 1 for ages 5-8
  • Level 2 for ages 9-12
  • Levels  3 and 4 for ages 13-18

It is important to keep in mind that these age ranges are subjective to your perception of the youth you are teaching. For example, if you have a 13-year-old that you feel may not be ready to see pictures of sexually transmitted infections then you would place them in Level 2. Otherwise, the age level being taught determines what information is delivered. These guidelines were determined by the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS). You will notice that Level 1 and Level 2 are the shortest in material. This is because age-dependent material covers less information at younger ages and builds on the information with each year. This is no different than starting with basic math and progressing to calculus.  In contrast, Level 3 and 4 are the longest because they incorporate all the information in the first 2 CDs and additional information for their age group as well.

Some sections in Level 3 and 4 are clearly presented for you. Two examples are the sections on contraception and sexually transmitted infections.  With respect to contraception, it is helpful to have examples of each contraception option available for your youth to examine first hand.  If you do not have examples, we may be able to help you in that area.

Feel free to cover whatever topics you desire but keep in mind the topics in this curriculum were selected to give your youth the most comprehensive coverage of sexuality education as possible. Additionally, if you choose to leave some sections out please, do so in the order listed above.

We have supplemental packets that will allow you to branch off from the curriculum and delve deeper into a given subject. The packets that are available (at an additional cost) are:

  • Menstrual Packet: This packet is a short but thorough examination of the female menstrual cycle. It clearly outlines how a cycle works from start to finish. It is designed to give young girls a better understanding of their body both physically and emotionally. It is best used in ages 9 and above.
  • Puberty Packet: This packet is a precise outline of the pubertal process for boys and girls. It outlines the Tanner Stages of Development and what is happening physically with each stage. It is a nice supplement to the puberty section. It is best used in ages 9 and above.
  • Relationship Packet: This packet is a complete power point of Robert Sternberg’s Triangle Theory of Love. Robert Sternberg is recognized as a world leader in psychology. He is currently Dean of Arts and Sciences at Tuffts University. This is an easy to understand concept of different types of relationships and what constitutes each one.  Also covered are styles of Unrequited Love. It is best used for ages 13 and above.

Several Games can also be used to emphasize certain topics:

  • Sexually Transmitted Infection Games
  • Reproductive Health Jeopardy
