Biographies

Executive Director:

Betsy Cairo PhD, HCLD, CSE, - is a Reproductive Biologist teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses at University of Northern Colorado since 1995. She emphasizes Reproductive Health through a variety of classes including Human Sexuality, Drug Abuse, and Human Disease.  Dr. Cairo has worked in the field of reproductive medicine for over 25 years.  She founded CryoGam Colorado, LLC, in 1990, where she remains the director and co-owner.  Dr. Cairo’s experience both in the field and in the classroom have fueled her passion and created a vision for educating Colorado’s youth, its educators and its communities. Because of this passion she formed Look Both Ways in 2006. Look Both Ways is a 501c3 dedicated to the area of comprehensive sexuality education. Dr. Cairo is a board certified Reproductive Biologist from the American Association of Bioanalysis as a High Complexity Clinical Laboratory Director (HCLD).  She is also certified by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapist (CSE).   She is a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine Psychological Special Interest Group, the American Association of Tissue Banks, the American Association of Bioanalysis, the American Association of Bioanalysis College of Reproductive Biology, The National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association and the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists.  She holds a PhD in Human Reproduction from the Union Institute, in Cincinnati, Ohio and a BS in Animal Science from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Board of Directors:

Kate Bowman is self employed and provides IT services for small to medium sized businesses including their computer, software, networking, service and training needs.   Kate has built a book-keeping company that services Colorado companies and previously, she was the General Manager and co-owner of a family business that sold cars, trucks, and farm equipment.  Kate began her involvement with The Gender Identity Center of Colorado in 1991and took on an active role in 2003, helping to promote and present at the Colorado Gold Rush conference.  The Gold Rush conference is one of 12 national transgender conferences put on during the year in different states.  In 2006 Kate became the Board Chair of the Gender Identity Center and still continues to hold that position.  She is also the Co-Chair of The Colorado Gold Rush Conference.  In her spare time, Kate does outreach presentations to high schools, community colleges, colleges, universities, businesses, and churches to educate people about the issues transgendered individuals face during their lives.  Kate is also involved in her Catholic Parish and notes that her 5 grandchildren outrank all of the above if they want to do something!

Bill Cairo - has lived in Loveland, Colorado, for 21 years with his wife and two children. He was graduated from Colorado State University in 1984 with a degree in veterinary medicine. Upon moving back to Colorado from Arizona, he started a medical transcription business. Bill has now ventured into the publishing business with the publication of his first book, The Story Behind the Glory: Winning Quotes from Sports Greats on the Game of Life. Bill has been a little league baseball coach and Boy Scout leader. His current charitable endeavors include speaking to nonprofit organizations, and most recently, mentoring youth through the Boys and Girls Club. 

Debbie Englert – was born and raised in Illinois and moved to Colorado to attend college.  She graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO with a BA in Elementary Education.  Debbie then went on to teach 1st and 2 second grades at Lincoln Elementary in Loveland, CO for over 25 years.  During her time teaching she served on many committees for content areas in science, reading and math.  Debbie also helped develop reading curriculum.  As a retired teacher Debbie enjoys exercising, reading and she is dedicated to improving education for children in her community. icing medicine in Northern Colorado for over three decades.

Thomas Englert, MD
– has been practicing medicine in Northern Colorado for over three decades.  He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed his residency at the House Officer Obstetrics & Gynecology at University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.   Dr. Englert has chaired the Perinatal Medicine Committee and Medicine Committee and the Department of Surgery, he has served on Credentials Committee and the Physician Advocacy Committee, and is a past Chief of Staff at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, CO.  Dr. Englert currently practices general gynecology with OB/GYN Associates of Big Thompson Medical Group, specializing in gynecological surgery and infertility. 

Richelle Frabotta, MSEd, CSE – a professional Sexuality Educator since 1993, serves as Director of Education Services for SO SECS (Southern Ohio Sexuality Education and Consultation Services).  Richelle educates about Sexuality where invited and works with many populations of people in diverse learning environments.  She implemented and coordinated the Social Training Education Project (STEP) which, in its 11th year, is a unique sexuality education program for people with disabilities, their support team and family members.  Richelle continues to teach Human Sexuality college courses since 1995 and has been adjunct faculty at Miami University Middletown since 1999.  Richelle has authored Study Guides and Instructor's Manuals for text books, reviewed chapters and has been interviewed by popular press.  Richelle is a Certified Sexuality Educator from the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists and is an active member of this prestigious organization.  Richelle has a profound respect for diversity of all kinds, believes strongly in prevention education and endeavors to empower people to make healthy choices for sexual expression. 

Anika Pallatzke, MPH received a Bachelor in Microbiology from North Dakota State University, and a Master in Public Health from the University of Northern Colorado.  As a graduate student, Anika worked as an intern for Look Both Ways by writing grant applications, and was instrumental in securing a 501 (3) c designation for Look Both Ways.  Her interests include HIV and STD prevention, sexual education in the public schools, and bacterial food borne illnesses.   Anika participates in raising money for Colorado AIDS Project by walking in the Colorado AIDS Walk for the last eight years.
 

Amy Schweers, CNP has worked in women's and adolescent health since 1987.  She began in public health as a Registered Nurse, working in family planning, pediatric wellness, adult wellness, postpartum home visits/education, and STD clinics.  In 1992 she began as a women's health nurse practitioner at Planned Parenthood, where she currently practices.  Amy has participated in a pregnancy prevention coalition, taught childbirth education classes, and has presented information on sexuality, STD's, and contraception to collegiate classes and small groups, including residential treatment centers for adolescents and youth prisons.  Amy holds a BA in Sociology and Black Studies, a BSN in Nursing and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Certification.

Monica Strachan, MPH - has a passion for working in public health, health promotion and education.  As a consultant at Worldways Social Marketing, she works on various projects covering various health topics, including emergency preparedness, reducing unintended pregnancies, water conservation, preventing falls and injuries among older adults and childhood obesity prevention. She understands the importance of conducting research properly and thoroughly. Her work with a health communication research firm has given her extensive experience in developing content, focus group facilitation and analysis, developing and testing multimedia and web tools for health promotion and different research evaluation techniques.  Monica enjoys giving back to her community by coaching soccer for Special Olympics with Denver Parks and Recreation.
